I picked my girl up from the last day of her first week of Girl Scout (day)camp, today. It was "France" themed - they baked french bread, made crepes and creme brulee, and took a field trip to the Venetian Pool (which involved her first time riding a school bus with a group of kids - we did ride on one as a family for a canoe trip at Peace River once).

She liked all of those things, but her favorite parts were the silly things - playing Telephone, Sailors and Storms, Musical Chairs and other such things, and making crafts like sand art key chains and paper beads for a bracelet. She picked "Rain" as her camp name and her two best friends over the course of the week were Sprinkles and Lavender.

She's wearing a fuschia shirt that says "Woodstock" and has a million technicolor graphics on it, with brown bermuda shorts and mismatched, patterned, rolled down socks with purple, blue, black and pink velour Pumas. The turquoise is fading out of the bottom of her hair from all the chlorine this week, and it's hanging down from a low ponytail held in place by a gold scrunchy.
Serious business.
She's also wearing what looks like 40 silly bandz on one wrist and 15 on the other.

The portobello burger (giant mushroom cap rather than meat) I had ready for her at the house made her really happy, with cheddar and tomato and a pickle. Now she's wandering around with a brownie. We held hands on the way to and from the building where we do pick up/drop off. I've only got like 3 inches on her anymore. She just asked me to put La Roux's "Bulletproof" and Lady GaGa's "Alejandro" on her iPod for her, since I'm hogging the computer. She randomly walks up to me, says "HUG!" and then squeezes me hard as I hug her.

One week off, then she goes back for "India" week, and then the next week is VBS, and then Dance Empire company rehearsals. I suppose I need to remind her about stretching and working on her turns every day. Every Saturday (except the one I was away) she goes to her friend Christina's all afternoon.

I still have to push and prod her at the last minute to do (social) things that were her idea initially, and that she's been excited about, but then tries to balk at when the time comes. She almost always thanks me (other times it's too much a battle of wills and she just grudingly says she did have an ok time). I still worry about her heaviness and seeming depressive tendencies. Everything is complicated, with Annie.

She's also developed major independent study habits in the past few weeks that are highly impressive. She's really driven to catch up to and surpass grade level in all her core subjects (she was about a year and a half behind in some areas at her worst academic point, due do dyslexia issues, and has progressed to being only about 9 months behind in language arts only, and perhaps 3 months in math skills). It's part of her big plan to be able to enter community college through dual enrollment when she's 14. She's also talking about saving her money for a college fund and all sorts of things lately. This began because she realized 14 was only as far ahead as Boston is behind us, and she remembers (at least a lot of) our time in Boston like it just happened.

She just gave Elise a piggy back ride into the kitchen. :)

I love her.

Elise is wearing a form fitting, bright green tank top and jean shorts today, and it's to die for adorable. Her super curly curls are hanging down to the middle of her back. Her hair is actually hip length at it's longest, when wet. She's a little grubby from running around outside and she's singing herself a song as she eats a bowl of chocolate cheerios and almond milk that Ananda just got her.

She talks noticeably better since I left for New York, which is awesome in a "whoa" sort of way. On the way home, I talked to her on the phone and after something I said, she interrupted "I know, but -" and while she finished I was mentally going "I KNOW, BUT"?!?! We were sitting on the round spinny chair together and she said "tickle my feet!" Grant was telling me she didn't have any accidents while I was gone and she came to me all excited, saying "No more accidents, me! On-ly toilet, me big!" It's not a sentence, but she just...has more words. She brought me the statue of liberty rubber ducky I brought her home and said, "My Ducky, my present my mom, came home! Surprise!" It's easy for her to say things like accidents, present and surprise in an understandable way. I don't know if fish oil is truly miraculous or if it's highly coincidental, but either way I'm happy :D We left my sister's earlier and she called out, "Bye, Fank! Bye, Ora! See you soon!"

Her default volume is definitely set to "Yell" with a secondary option of "Screech", but we're working on that ;)

She is so affectionate, blowing kisses back and forth with me in the van, and running up to kiss me all the time randomly. Holding out her arms saying "Hug and kiss!" and then, as she squeezes me with a grunt of effortI can barely detect, "Love, my mom".

She can also now dress herself in footsie pajamas, put socks on and other such moderately complex acts. I love watching her. I love the way she says "myself" when she does it on her own.

I love her.

Daughters are such special people, I spoke to mine last night for 45 mins on the phone laughing and reminicing and when I got off the phone I just sat back and thought wow ...when did she grow up and how did it happen so fast...
I'm glad you had a good time in NY :)

That is the question, isn't it?

I think it all the time, and mine are (only?) 10, and 3.

I'm so glad the fish oil seems to be helping! Once she hits a plateau, you can increase the dosage again. I did this a few times with Owen before he stopped progressing in speech with increased dosages.

Are you asking anyone for guidance or to oversee the dosing? Or just basing it on your own research/his results? She's taking coromega right now, one packet per day.

At first, I got advice from Dr. Sears, the senior. Not directly, but through someone else. He recommended that every child take 500 mg and children with any "quirks" should be taking 1000 mg. He also sent me a book he published about brain foods for children. He also stressed the importance of a good brand. Since then, he's come out with his own brand of fish oil for kids. Then I started researching online and found the website: http://www.cherab.org/ This site had a discussion board where they discussed fish oil and dosages and such. What I learned was that certain brands are better for speech delays (like Nordic Naturals, or Carlsons) and that dosage isn't too much of a concern. Basically fish oil is a food, and you can either feed your kid a whole lot more fish, or give them higher doses of mercury free fish oil instead. Also, kids get lots of fatty oils, just not the right kinds. Their is high amounts in things like french fries and chicken nuggets, but it isn't the kind of oils the brain needs. The only danger I can see in giving a higher dosage is if the supplement contains some other vitamin that could be overdosed on, such as vitamin A. Owen is currently taking 2000 mg of Nordic Naturals Omega 3 6 9 Juniors. His highest dose was 3000 mg, but we were able to fall back to a more affordable dosage.

Hope that helps!

Ok, so I've gotta ask..what's Sailors and Storms? I run our summer camping program at our local YMCA as a volunteer, and I am always on the lookout for fun new games to play. After 10 years, I thought I knew them all, but I've never heard of that!

I called Ananda in to ask for a more detailed description and apparently I had the name wrong - it's Ships and Sailors, and if you google that there are instructions all over the place that are probably a lot easier to understand than her retelling :) She really loved it, there's a lot of improvisation involved and that were cracking up over it.
