It's kind of funny to me to look back and realize that, though I never considered or dreamt of being a mom as I was growing up - let alone a homeschooling mom - there were a lot of other, uh, foreshadowing factors. Whilst I was a paid nanny and volunteer Sunday School teacher, in high school, I had this idea to start an AMAZING Kindergarden. I would offer a couple of totally free scholarships every year so different kids could come. We would cook and garden and have pets and all kinds of hoohaw. Just a freestanding Kindergarden.
So far today I've set Isaac, Jake and Elise up with paint, and did a lesson on primary colors and mixing and brush care. I've sat with Ananda and Aaron doing math that involves tally sticks, an abacus, and lots of discussion. I've guided the five of them to do their chores and also through making a pumpkin bread recipe themselves, start to finish. And sent Annie out to feed the chickens, and gave Aaron broccoli for the rabbits.
What's really funny is how long it took me to connect these things. For the longest time I was just like, "I never played with dolls as a kid. I never picked out imaginary baby names. I never thought about ever being a mom one day. How weird!" Which is all true.
But not exactly the whole story.
