This is what I've cooked/prepared/offered today:

-Made everyone fried eggs on toast with smart balance and (sea) salt for breakfast
-we took "organic lemon wafers" with us up to the therapist, Grant and the kids ate them at a nearby park with nature trails while I was in my (2 hour) session
-apple slices with cheddar and baby carrots with peanut butter, for lunch
-Right now I've got a big old pot of bean soup on the stove, am baking a pound cake, and have a pitcher of sweet iced tea chilling in the fridge (dinner and dessert)

How about you?

G called!! She DID end up in the hospital, she's got a ruptured ear drum, and she was mortified that her partner hadn't called us because she had told her she would. I am not GLAD that she had to go to the ER, but I am really, really happy that there was an extenuating circumstance and she wasn't just blowing us off or whatever. We had decided to give it another week before we decide whether or not there is "a problem", but the lack of phone contact had me feeling like it was just over, so...back to the give it a week, now.

Therapy was really intense and rewarding today. It's strange to have something too personal to write about in my lj, for me at least, but this stuff is. Suffice to say...I feel so lucky to have my husband, and so glad to have my own adult life in general separate from, oh, say, MY X-STEPDAD.

I'm psyched about my flower beds. Yesterday featured a long sweaty evening that ended in me filthy as hell, taking a nice long bath with Jake and Elise in mah huge tub. Very satisfying. I also have some new kitchen window herbs (italian parsley and spearmint added to the basil that was already there), and trasplanted our lychee tree into a bigger pot (we're waiting until the fence is in to plant it in the ground, since the planting spot is very close to where the fence will be).

A random, lone, beautiful purple flower also sprouted up in the middle of the grass, and Grant was due to mow, but Aaron swayed me with his big heart and bigger eyes, so I dug up the roots with him and put it in the old lychee tree pot. I told him there are no guarantees it will do anything but die, but it was worth it for me just to see him standing there cupping the dirt in his hands, talking to the thing "It's ok, Little Flower. We're not mowing you." This from my electric guitar wielding, frequently mohawk'd, karate obsessed flibberdiggibit that can barely pay attention to schoolwork...

The bunnies are doing well, and I am REALLY EXCITED about getting chickens, even if it is still a couple of months off.

My eardrum ruptured once when I was pregnant with Isaac. Because it relieved the most intensely painful pressure, and abruptly ended MONTHS of suffering after round upon round of antibiotics, it was one of the most awesome things to ever happen to me. But, I am weird like that and pop pimples and junk, so this insane amount of gunk coming out and finally being able to hear again was about as satisfying as it gets. I had had a visible lump on my face for weeks.

I don't know why I'm posting more, but you make me laugh :p For awhile there it was very hard to post because we didn't have internet access here at the new house yet. And for awhile before that I didn't want to, largely because of PTSD stuff I guess.

(not health or elitism related)eeeeeewww Burger King!! Ugh. I swear they are on the very bottom of the drive thru hierarchy. I think for me it would go...hmm....Starbucks, Popeye's Chicken, Wendy's, Arby's, Taco Bell, drive thru chinese, Long John Silver's, Dunkin Donuts...then WAAAAY down there, McDonalds...and WAAAY down like under the magma, BK.

At least one person in the house still ends up eating fast food at least once a week. I like that at least at places like Wendy's Annie has vegetarian options like a caesar salad or baked potato with brocoli and cheese on it.

The kitchen window here is freakin awesome, some previous owner set it up with a big bay window type thing jutting out from it with two shelves, and a system that allows drainage onto the concrete outside, when you water things there. It's begging me for far more than the 3 paltry pots I've got in it now.

I hope you can hear it as the way I would talk to my sister, who I call Ho-Bag with all sincere affection ;)

When I was growing up my dad took us through BK's all the time and I remember always getting a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger and loving it. Which is weird because now? YUCK.

When we were in a small subletted apartment in Boston, with me overdue pregnant and the neighbors knocking on the door daily for kid-noise, it was pretty emabarassingly frequent, too. One of the best things about stopping at Dama's on the way back was a break from "road food". I got up in the morning and she had bluberry muffins on the counter! And bacon and eggs! And...apologies because it might not be what I wanted. That is Dama for you.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You made me all "WHOA CRAP WE COULD MEET!!"

I don't know. But I've never went a year without going. At the latest, come Spring, Grant will have accumulated time off and we'll get our tax return and will be headed North. Not specifically to JVille, but hey, this is a peninsula. There's basically only one way in and out.

I've never seen/heard the Wiggles. Do they do School House Rock songs? We recently bought the SHR dvds, along with a couple of other educational things - like a spanish language one - for the van, and play them when we're out all afternoon running errands or go somewhere far. Which is something I use to swear I would never, ever do.

For the internet record, I think it's OK for the kids to watch educational DVDs in the van, sometimes.

Oooh we made pound cake too we also added fresh blueberries from my MIL's garden.
Bean soup, it sounds amazing. I love your cooking. I've tried your tomato tart and it's a huge hit with my family. I think I make it twice a month now even when tomatoes are not in season.

I like it. It's just a mix of dried beans by Bob's Red Mill, that I soak overnight and then add to onions, garlic, celery, carrots, chicken broth and pureed tomatoes, and cook with salt, pepper and basil until the beans are mushy and it's thick. It soaks up a LOT of water and takes a little over two hours, but as long as it gets stirred every 15-20 minutes you can basically forget about it all that time.

And thanks, I LOVE that tomato tart too! It wasn't my invention, though, someone posted it a long time ago in [livejournal.com profile] naturalfamily.

Ooooh, tomato tart? Do you happen to have a link to that recipe?

Date: 2008-08-29 04:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] altarflame.livejournal.com
...It's probably tagged "recipes", but, basically, it's just pie crust, with layers that go (from the bottom by the crust) - minced garlic to your taste, solid layer of tomato slices, salt pepper basil and parmesean, solid layer of tomato slices, salt pepper basil and parmesean, mozzarrella. Bake until cheese on top is browned a bit around the melty edges.

The only thing is, you have to lay the tomato slices out on paper towels for awhile before you assemble it, and press more into the tops, or else your crust will be a soggy wet mess. Sometimes it is anyway, but it's worth it ;)

It sounds really easy. I love that you cook all your meals and that you care about what goes into them. I cook most of my meals too, and it's rewarding eating something you created then ordering from a restaurant.
PS glad to hear that your nanny is ok. I would give her a chance after she gets better. It's hard to find someone who understand how you run your household.

I also love your new home, so inviting and warm.

I'm so so glad that the therapy is helping so much.

My friend had a ruptured eardrum a couple months ago; I hope G recovers quickly. I'm glad it was truly something she had no control over!

Meals here today were:
-Natural peanut butter on whole grain toast with banana.
-Panzenella made with fresh heirloom tomatoes grown less than a mile away.
-Made from scratch eggplant parmesan with mostly-local ingredients.

I ate WAY too much of the latter two because they were soooo good. :-)

I have a hard time when I do food posts because I always think it will sound really snotty to say, like, "natural peanut butter and allfruit preserves on whole wheat" as opposed to "pbj" - but damnitt there is a difference!! :p

THERE IS! I totally agree. You can make kid friendly food HEALTHY too... I hear so many mainstream parents say "well my kid will only eat pbj" yah but if you make your own bread, buy organic pb and real fruit spreads you can make it healthy as well! Course my kids devour sushi, hummus, salad... they have well rounded tastes ;)

I'll just tell you that I ate a lot of peppermint patties today :(

have you posted pics of the new house and I missed it??? I definately missed the bunny post.

I did post some pics of the new house awhile back, and then I just posted some more in the entry after this. The older ones are more extensive, they are tagged "our house" so if you click that tag on the side of my journal and scroll back, it shouldn't be long until you see it. I think the entry was called, "Signs that someone may live here after all" or something like that.

A lot of people tell me they miss my posts because I tend to post at, like, 3:30 am. I think that's weird, though, because I always go back to the last thing I saw on my friends page and start from there :p To each their own, I'm sure I'd feel differently if I was reading a really big friends' list.
