It's Victor Hugo's fault for turning what should have been a gripping page-turner into a turgid never-ending trudge through endless descriptions of people staring into mirrors, the sewers of Paris, and carriage trades. If the book didn't suck because he was getting paid by the word, people would read it and they would know.
