it's kind of important! The events of Les Mis take place in post-revolutionary France! All of the characters grew up in chaos - that's why Fantine and Javert don't have parents. Napoleon has already been Emperor! Waterloo has already happened! It's like saying South Pacific happens during the Vietnam War, or West Side Story is about the Crips and Bloods.
