I'm an atheist, but I do something akin to shock-reaction praying. To me it's not an invocation of a higher power, or a God or anything like that, but it is just me vocalizing (even internally) my feelings about the situation. But it's funny, because I will still say things like "please be okay!", and it's not that there's a direction for the plea, it's more like a rhetorical one. But the intention is the same.
