Your dad's theory is not "insane." Read church history- priestly celibacy started around the 12th century because bishops were passing on church lands, funds, and in some cases, their title/role as bishops to their sons.
Not sure why you think this is so crazy. The church has a lot of unsavory things in its past, and has a history of making some bad choices in order to protect its wealth and power.
