I just wanted to add that I don't think the way that this country runs things now would be a preferable option (eg Medicaid). I think it would be crap, so you certainly have a point there. I don't, however, think that should mean we should give up on trying for something better or just deal with what we have now as the lesser of two evils. There are examples out there of systems that work well, and we can at least strive to be like them.
