altarflame: (deluge)
I am kinda tipsy, and it's pretty nice at the moment. For instance, I get to pretend I'm not sore from running :)

I drank what felt like SO much wine while we were in Maryland - I split a bottle with Grant one afternoon in the hotel, and a bottle with Kristin at her house one night. I had glasses over dinner with Jenne. I suppose it was not actually all that much, but over the course of 4 days it felt like a ton (in a good way!). At my house, I can open a bottle and then realize it's gone sour a month later.

Today was a full day. From cooking Isaac breakfast to hanging out with my sister and her kids here all morning, to finding out I DID get the Stats II override I've been waiting to hear about. Just very nonstop :) Calling the FLVS teachers for welcome calls, and baths in the evening, and three trips to the same pharmacy. I filled out so much paperwork for this new dental office - they were extremely comprehensive forms. They wanted things I've never even heard of before, like previous address information and each kids' hobbies. I had to write Grant's social security number down FIFTEEN TIMES. Ludicrous.

The (pediatric) dentist was great. We switched to a new, in-town office and I really wanted it to work. Since it did, this is one less thing I have to get on the highway for. Dentist and staff were super nice, pulled out all the stops for the kids. We filled up all of one exam area and part of another... there was nobody else there and we had one x-ray lady and two hygienists going in shifts, as the dentist walked around one by one. She didn't mind taking a lot of time to talk about things like controversy re: fluoride or the downsides of dental sealants with my paranoid, overly researched ass, and every one of my kids came away with handfuls of loot (from new toothbrushes, pencils, stickers and the sunglasses they get to wear while lying back with the exam light over them, to "dollars" that can be exchanged for little prizes or saved up to trade in for movie tickets). I took them out for pizza afterwards as a treat.

Ananda's finally going to have to start some orthodontic work, which she is oddly eager for. She's been wanting braces for years, not as a smile enhancer to suffer through but as a "cool teenager thing" to have while they're on. I shouldn't laugh, as I was totally the same way (though I never ended up with any).

Jake and Isaac are just a mess (cavities). Ananda, Aaron and Elise have great teeth, decay-wise - meaning, no decay. Some spacing/impaction issues with Annie is all. But Isaac and Jake, just...good grief. I was almost crying at one point about Isaac having cavities on adult teeth now, too. They have really inherited Grant's teeth :/ It is totally unfair that Aaron is the one with 100% flawless teeth, since he is TOTALLY the slacker when it comes to brushing.

The dentist was thrilled that Elise's hypoplastic* baby teeth are giving way to perfectly healthy adult teeth - apparently that's 50/50. I've been so busy hoping the wack baby teeth hang in there long enough to fall out on their own without pulling (which has mostly happened with all of the worst ones, already) that I hadn't even realized grown up teeth coming in pre-ruined was even an option. Lucky for me, I guess.

I was on the phone with an auto place while we were out driving, because the van is desperately in need of new tires and overdue for an oil change, in addition to the AC fan in the front needing to be replaced. Which is killer. Actually ordering everything is a relief at this point.

I worked on the budget for literally hours once we were home this evening. The amount of "extra" shit in September is just ridiculous. Between the additional, follow-up dental appointments for kids and the van maintenance, along with some minor start up costs for fall activities, it's thousands. I'm having a love-hate relationship with my various insurances and trying to just stay grateful that we can actually make all these things work...somehow.

Off topic, but our mayor - my town's mayor - was arrested, last week. I REALLY don't like this guy, for many years now. Aside from his generally arrogant mannerisms and good old boy reputation, he personally insulted my mother in law's very sweet, cool and talented husband at a public event years ago. Chuck has cerebral palsy and now-x-mayor called him "Cripple" in the middle of a whole slew of shit he shouldn't have said.

He's just a jerk. Who has, allegedly, been doing all kinds of corrupt shit around town and collecting all sorts of money as pay off. This is actually THE THIRD MAYOR IN MIAMI DADE COUNTY to be arrested recently, which is perhaps not as surprising as one would assume.

What is really blowing my mind is that he is STILL IN THE RUNNING for re-election. There are new signs popping up around town, even as he posts bond and the City Council holds press conferences about why he is no longer in office for the current term. Just. WHAT?!

I almost feel it is my civic duty to vandalize his stupid signs. Surely some responsible citizen will step up with a can of spray paint?!

I have a million hours of homework to do this 3 day weekend. I am also pretty stoked that it is a 3 day weekend, with everybody off from everything. Particularly because I'm starting my period and it is always a relief when my especially, uh, prolific bleeding days can be spent laying low, taking naps and taking supplements and not ruining public furniture.

*missing enamel...in her case, this resulted in irregular (and shrinking) shape, although there was no discoloration. This dentist says it's common in kids who received mega doses of antibiotics in infancy :/ I would like to know if the MI paste we were smearing in her mouth for years helped preserve her teeth as they were, or if the fish oil, probiotics, and other antifungals and immune boosters really helped alter her pH in helpful ways re: saliva acidity, or if they just ended up lasting on their own - you know, pointless curiosity about things that don't matter either way at this point :p
