WHAT?! (with new EDIT on Andrea!!)
Jun. 28th, 2010 10:37 pmOk, so, I've been thinking about taking the bus, as previously written about. Obstacles I've considered include heat, walking distance/circumstances with small children, and additional travel times.
What I did not expect was that it would COST MORE TO RIDE THE BUS THAN TO DRIVE. Like, to the degree that I cannot afford to ride the bus. I mean...how can this BE?!
A one month pass for myself on Miami Dade Transit is $100. ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, JUST FOR MYSELF. Then Ananda, Aaron, Isaac and Jake would have to have discounted, student rate $50 passes. An additional $200. Elise is free. This means that for the 6 of us to ride the bus would cost signifiantly MORE than gas for my minivan costs!! What kind of flawed system is this?!?! Even when I factor in tolls, the bus costs more than travelling in our ok-smelling, parked right at our house van, with which we can easily make any additional stops in without ever sweating or getting rained on. Our van that plays music, audiobooks and dvds.
Something is wrong with this system.
I mean, we were going to try it out for the first time tomorrow. That is where this research started. I found that if you are paying cash, the kids are $2 each for a single trip, so $8 each way just for the kids and another four for me, total. TWENTY DOLLARS TO TAKE THE BUS ROUND TRIP. I literally do not have $20 for the bus tomorrow (it costs about $7 in gas round trip in my van and that is already in the tank, and my SunPass is charged for the $3 in tolls), so I started looking into the passes. And was flabbergasted. I really had no idea.
THIS IS RIDICULOUS.
How is it where you live? Am I naive to have thought it would cost any less than it does? Is the thinking here that people are supposed to do transit RATHER than vehicle ownership, so this is still a bargain since there are no auto insurance, payment or maintenance costs involved?
ETA: Andrea has been awake for a couple of days now, albeit distressed and unable to speak because of the breathing tube. They removed it this morning though, and so now she can TALK!!! Grace says she is very happy but does feel bad for the nurses, now :p I spoke with the lady on facebook who co-runs Pemberly Estate with Andrea here on Lj and she said they are gathering money and votes for what should go in a package. I will get the info on how to donate to that amount and submit ideas for what to send soon.
