So far today, I've started and restarted diapers washing (they get a plain cold and then a hot with soap run through...), hand washed 8 wool diaper covers, made Ananda and I omelettes and Aaron, Isaac and Jake scrambled eggs, managed to take a shower, changed and nursed Elise twice...and I think that's about it, so far, aside from a lot of hugging and talking. And Jake is nursing as I type.
Some of you won't even know what I'm talking about, BUT - I'm mortified by what's happened to our diaper stuff while I was in pain, and then absent for almost 2 weeks, and then out of commission for a couple more. The changing table got piled over with laundry and toys, such that there was no where to stack diapers, such that they ended up all over the damned place...when I need one now, I have to check the top of the dryer, a drawer in our room, a laundry basket in the laundry room, and the pile on top of the changing table. If all else fails there might be one in the diaper bag. Gah. That is not that big of a deal, and is getting better, but I just THREW AWAY three sugar peas wool covers that I got used and was using on the third kid of my own. Meaning, they would have lasted absolutely forever...if they hadn't ended up sitting in dirty wool wash water for almost a month, only to be remembered in a panic on the back porch and placed on the grass to sun...and forgotten for another 4 days. They were totally beyond redemption. And, I can't find our two lanas, which are ultra-reliable ultimate nighttime covers, AND Grant accidentally washed everything in Tide with Fabric Softener a couple of times and I'm still stripping things to get the Fuzzi Bunz to stop wicking. And then there is the Fuzzi Bunz that was found still poopy in a sealed wet bag in the back of the van, under the double stroller...that went straight to the garbage. ARGH.
We took cloth and wool on the road to Boston, with two in diapers on the way back. A 5 day and a 12 day road trip alone, with two months of apartment living and (Grant) laundromat laundering in between. And we had no problems. I never even thought twice about it. *sigh*
For those who don't know, 3 sugar peas wool covers and a fuzzi bunz with insert would retail for over a hundred dollars. If I can't find the Lanas, which were given to me, they would be $70 (plus shipping) to replace.
I'm really in love with Elise's longies right now. She has three pairs that fit her - two that I crocheted for Isaac and then Jake wore, and one that I made for her, while I was pregnant. I want to buy tons of yarn and make her more and more and more, so she can just be in longies all the time. If you don't know, longies are wool pants that serve as a diaper cover and pants at the same time. So they're warm for nighttime, they keep the grass off bare legs for crawling around the yard and knees padded on the tile, and paired with almost any shirt they make a pretty damned fabulous outfit. They also cost like *$90* and up if you buy them new and they're nice, but I happen to make them myself, so it's just the cost of yarn.
Two nights ago, Ananda kept tickling Grant. Finally he told her that if she tickled him again, he was going to go put her in the bathtub, clothes and all, and turn the cold shower on. She tickled, he showered, they were laughing their heads off (they being all the kids, not just her). Then Grant was outside talking on the phone to his mom and Annie changed - her and Aaron got her wet clothes and tiptoed out the door to ambush him, whipping and flinging the wet stuff on him. At first he just ran around the yard talking, and I think they got him twice before he hung up and resorted to defending himself with the hose.
That's just the way we roll :p
Today's menu:
Breakfast
mushroom and cheese omelette or cheesy scrambled eggs, with OJ
Lunch
turkey and tomato sandwiches with Claussen pickles
Dinner
chicken and veggie terriyaki stir fy over brown rice, chicken optional
So far Elise has eaten peas, brown rice, avocado, canteloupe, honeydew, carrot, banana, chopped raisins and finely diced yellow bell pepper. I think we're going to try scrambled egg yolk and stewed lentils, next. She's EXTREMELY enthusiastic about food, getting super excited when we put her in the little feeding seat and lunging and crying for anything she sees us putting in our mouths. Pretty much everything she's had since the first night we experimented with a puree and spoon, has been piece-y or chunks that she's self-fed.
I can't BELIEVE she's 7 months old.
Bah, I walked away from this and hours passed. Like five of them. We ate lunch and dried diapers and started more and played in the front yard, and studied for AWANA tonight and hung out with Brian and Laura...and so on.
I feel hyper and ultra alive. I want to go to Santa's and ride rides, or take a long swim, or maybe roll around on the grass with Aaron outside for awhile.
