Overrepresenting doesn't help anyone, because it allows people whom it makes uncomfortable to continue holding it at arm's length under the guise of it being "popular" or "new". It's not real because it's chic. That's kind of how Curtis' parents view a lot of it... which is unfortunate. It's a convenient scapegoat. At the same time, merely admitting that it's "overrepresented" is kind of playing into it - because it's like saying strong women are "overrepresented" ever since that suffrage thing.
