Elise is so beautiful. Her hair is magic. She LOVES getting her hair brushed, which is this whole new thing for me as Ananda has always hated having her hair brushed to a degree that alternately resulted in restraining or something like dreadlocks, when she was 3. Elise's is also getting really long, which is sort of dumbfounding - this thick, curly, long, shiny hair on her tiny 3 year old self. I brushed it for about 15 minutes just for fun. It's several inches longer when wet and pulled out straight. It curls a few inches shorter within half an hour of brushing.

(cinnamon sugar toast mouth)

Ananda: Elise, can I braid your hair?
Elise: No me know, "braid hair".
Ananda: It's a kind of style...it's fancy.
Elise: Ok!

It hadn't even occured to me that her hair could be braided yet. Evidently it's possible. I am so inept at hair styling - Ananda, in addition to not wanting hers touched at all, has also hacked it into a chin length bob every few years. Which suits her in a way I could never pull off and is cool in it's own way - but I feel really awkward and just end up shrugging when we're out somewhere and I see mothers with little girls in perfectly smooth ponytails and french braids that obviously involve product and things like that. Elise's hair tends to be either in her eyes, in her mouth, or both, when she's been playing, and now she even has this stupid little piece Jake cut that hangs over her forehead separate from the rest.

awww I wanna brush her hair! It totally does look magical. I can't wait til Stella has enough hair to do anything with it. I can't even put in one of those silly palm trees.

Elise reminds me of Jakey in that third picture for some reason.

Elise and her hair are both lovely. :) Hannah's hair was waist-length when she was younger and kind of a struggle at that length--it was fine and very tangly, so we could only have it in braids. Even then, it still looked messy after a while, because it would fall out of the braids. (Wrong product, clearly. ;)

I think Elise's braid is very pretty, but I prefer the tumbled curls that she usually has. If you'd like to learn, though, French braiding really isn't hard.

I know the basic concept of how to do it, I guess I just need to practice, because anytime I've done it on Ananda it comes out very loose and kind of messy and doesn't last long.

I ended up pulling each individual row on the braids pretty tight. It must not have pulled too much, because Hannah didn't object to it even when she was pretty small.

Now, of course, she makes "ow" a five syllable word if I even look at her while holding a brush.

elise's hair is magical. it reminds me a lot of my 4 year old's, which i'm kind of obsessed with. my hair is super straight and i always longed for curls like my younger sister had. so to have a curly-haired daughter thrills me like nothing else. i am so one of those moms who puts her little girls in french braids and all sorts of hairdos everyday.

(two pigtails, or down, but parted in the middle and with two barrettes or hair ties pulling the front most pieces to the side are some of my favorite styles, because it keeps it out of her face but allows her curls to still show.)

I do love the pigtails and the little clips for front pieces - but even still both of those are like, twice a month things around here :p Grant is actually usually the one to "do" her hair, though I'm the daily brusher.

Annie recognized it on sight, and then I ran for her baby book and showed Elise pictures of her wearing it ♥
