It sounds to me like the video game playing is a vicious cycle for him. It can be so addictive, and make you depressed the more you do it, which makes you want to do it more, and then you get more depressed. Of course, he has to choose to limit it himself or he will just be hateful and resentful towards you. Perhaps if you start talking to him about the addictive nature of video gaming, and how it can be fun for an hour or two a day, but it can be harmful if your doing it any longer than that. Maybe challenge him to give it up for a day, then a weekend, then a week if he seems at all receptive to the idea. It sounds to me like until he sees that and limits it, he is not going to learn how to live in the real world.
